President Joe Biden’s first press conference

President Joe Biden held his first formal news conference since arriving at the White House. He covered a wide range of issues and was repeatedly pressed about that southern border surge and whether his policies have contributed to the rise of unaccompanied minors.
Sixty-five days into his administration, the president stepped out to face reporters for his first news conference, and it was the southern border emergency that now threatens to overshadow his agenda that dominated.
Reporter: “customs and border protection facility in donna texas. I was there at 1556 percent capacity right now, mostly unaccompanied minors, there are children sleeping on the floors. are packed into these capsules what is your reaction to these images that have come out of that particular facility is it acceptable to you what is going on inside.”
Joe Biden: “Is that a serious question, right? Is that acceptable to me? Come on, that’s why we’re going to get thousands of these kids out quickly, that’s totally unacceptable.”
Tonight there are some 16,000 unaccompanied migrant children now in US custody, almost a record.
Journalist: “Sir, you blamed the last administration, but it is your message and you say that these children will be allowed and will be allowed to stay in this country and work on this process by encouraging families like Joe says to come.”
Joe Biden: The idea that I’m going to say what I would never do, if an unaccompanied child ends up at the border, we’re going to let them starve and stay on the other side. No previous administration did that, except triumph. I’m not going to do it.
The other urgent crisis those two mass shootings in the space of a week lost 18 lives but facing the political reality that with the 50-50 split in the Senate. His party doesn’t have the votes to pass sweeping gun control legislation. The president issued this warning to Republicans indicating that he might back rule changes in the Senate to advance his agenda.
Joe Biden: “We’re going to do a lot and if we have to, if there’s a complete lockdown in chaos as a result of filibuster, then we’re going to have to go beyond what I’m talking about.”
