Kanye West terminates his contract with Gap

Kanye West’s brand Yeezy has ended its association with Gap after almost two years.

Here is everything you need to know.

Kanye West officially splits from Gap

Gap Chairman Mark Breitbard confirmed the news in a memo released Thursday.

He wrote, “While we share a vision of bringing cutting-edge, high-quality utilitarian design to all people through unique Omni experiences with Yeezy Gap, the way we work together to deliver this vision is not aligned.”

In addition, he stated: “And we are deciding to liquidate the company.”

Kanye West, now known as Ye, on the other hand, addressed the news while speaking to CNBC on Thursday afternoon via video call.

He said: ‘It was always a dream of mine to be at Gap and bring the best possible product.’

The 45-year-old rapper continued: ‘It was very frustrating. He was very disheartening because I just put in everything he had. I put all my best relationships.

He was referring to the time his connections managed to persuade Balenciaga creative director Demna to join them on a capsule collection.

However, Ye concluded his statement by stating: ‘Everyone knows that I am the leader, I am the king. A king cannot live in someone else’s castle. A king has to build his own castle.

More on Kanye West’s association with Gap

Kanye West and Gap’s partnership kicked off with a publicity drumbeat in June 2020. The two signed a ten-year deal with the potential to generate more than $1 billion in annual sales.

Regardless, for the past few months, West has been accusing the brand of cutting him out of the creative process on social media. In addition, he called out Gap for marketing delays.

West’s attorney, Nicholas Gravante, claimed that the rapper “diligently tried to work out these issues with Gap.” Both directly and through a lawyer. However, he has ‘gotten nowhere’.

Regardless, on August 16, West’s legal team sent a breach of contract notice to Gap. Although the brand responded with a letter on August 23, Gravante wrote in a statement, “GAP left Ye with no choice but to terminate their collaboration agreement.”

He continued, ‘GAP’s material breach of its contractual obligations has been costly’.

He further added: ‘Now they will move quickly to make up for lost time. By opening Yeezy retail stores.
