Adobe recently announced that it has entered into a definitive merger agreement to acquire Figma, a collaborative graphics and design web application. Dylan Field, CEO and co-founder of Figma, shared the news on Twitter, saying, “With access to @Adobe’s deep experience and innovation, we believe @Figma will be able to achieve our vision of ‘making design open to all.’ Too much faster.

Dylan Field and Evan Wallace started building design startup Figma to challenge Adobe’s PhotoShop. Currently, Adobe has made them billionaires after announcing that it would acquire Figma for $20 billion in money and stock. Figma has been branded as Google Docs, or GitHub, for designers with a loyal customer base in large numbers who pay $12 to $45 per publisher for their digital whiteboard product. Who is Dylan Field?

Dylan Field is the CEO and co-founder of Figma, a graphics and design web application. According to his LinkedIn page, Dylan Field went to Brown University and reportedly studied computer science and math. After more than two and a half years in college, Dylan took a leave of absence in 2012 and accepted the Thiel Scholarship. Dylan Field describes this as a two-year $100,000 grant to “stop going to college and reportedly take up entrepreneurial ventures.” Prior to Figma, Dylan Field worked as a Product Design Intern and Software Engineering Intern at Flipboard. In a blog post for Figma, Field wrote that one of the highlights of his job as CEO is “playing anthropologist.”

Over the past five years, I’ve seen firsthand how working in a collaborative digital space moves groups from a ‘my ideas’ to ‘our ideas’ mindset, he said, in many ways, design it’s deeply personal, and opening that work up to others to expand and remix can be like opening up a part of yourself. However, that is the reason why this change is so significant. In 2015, Dylan Field was featured on Forbes’ 30 Under 30: Consumer Technology list. He was only 22 years old at the time.

Adobe announced the acquisition of Figma

Adobe reported Thursday, September 15, that it has entered into a definitive merger agreement to acquire Figma, a leading web-based collaborative design platform, for approximately $20 billion in barrels and stock. Established by Dylan Field and Evan Wallace in 2012, Figma, which allows customers to collaborate on software as they make it, saw a spike in demand during the pandemic as more people worked remotely. Shantanu Narayen, president and CEO of Adobe, said Adobe’s importance lies in our ability to reclassify and deliver cutting-edge technologies through natural development and inorganic acquisitions.

The combination of Adobe and Figma is groundbreaking and will accelerate our vision of cooperative innovation. As stated in the press release, Adobe and Figma together will ‘reimagine the destiny of creativity and productivity, accelerate inventiveness on the web, advance product design, and stimulate global communities of creators, designers and developers. Adobe and Figma are enthusiastic about helping people and groups become more imaginative and useful, meaning the combined company will “power the future of work” by bringing together capabilities to conceptualize, share, inventiveness and joint effort and convey these developments to a large number of customers.
